#2 Cervical Instability & Myofascial Neck Pain
w/ significant contribution to TMJ-related symptoms
The strong influence of the neck/cervical spine directly on the muscles and structures of the face and jaw has been known for some time. Especially as it relates to the the upper regions of the cervical spine which provides the very foundation for the skull and face.
When there’s tension or asymmetry in the upper neck, it conveys that tension directly into the face- both mechanically and through their related trigeminocervical nucleus neurological connection.
In the medical journal Clinical Oral Investigations, oral surgeons in Belgium made this connection in his study Correlation between cervical spine and temporomandibular disorders
The results showed that cervical segmental dysfunction (especially at the C0-C3 levels) and tender points (especially in the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles) are significantly more present in patients with TMJ than in the control subjects.
Through manual therapy, we re-stabilize the cervical spine and in the process address the heightened muscle tension throughout the neck and face.

#3 Trismus
Trismus refers to muscle spasms surrounding the TMJ that results in restricted opening of the jaw.
In my experience when I see patients that have trismus following a dental procedure- they can often just assume that their dentist is at fault. After seeing me, they will generally realize that the tension in their neck and face has been simmering in the background for quite some time just waiting for a moment to come forward.
Together we address ALL the contributors that contributed to their muscle spasm and limited jaw opening- while also directly relieving the tension in the muscles.
