FAQs
Why should I choose a hANS Physical Therapy for neck, head and jaw pain?
Why not Just See a Dentist for a Night Guard or Dental Appliance ?
Ok, this is a great question. A dental appliance or nightguard can be helpful. Importantly, it can protect your teeth at night. The problem though is that it doesn’t change the causes of your TMJ. Because of this there is limited evidence to support the role of occlusal splints in Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) therapy as you can see from this study.
For this reason, I would highly recommend utilizing specialized oral-facial physical therapy- like the kind offered in our office- in coordination with your dentist's care for resolution of your TMJ and TMJ-related issues (-including headaches, ear symptoms, neck/shoulder/upper back tightness).
Is a referral from my doctor or dentist required before I'm treated?
No, a referral from your doctor or dentist is not required. Colorado state practice laws do allow direct access to the physical therapist of your choice even without a referral from your dentist or physician. There are occasions where we encourage the involvement of a dentist or physician to facilitate your care as your needs require it for additional imagery, splinting or procedures. Physical therapy serves as an excellent inital foundation for your physical well-being as many times you can avoid more expensive and invasive interventions. Often times more serious and involved medical care often be ruled out after only 2-3 treatment sessions.
